“We began operations in 1984 and five years later started raising chickens organically. Nobody was doing that back then, and even today it’s cost-prohibitive,”says Shigenori Mukoyama of the 16-hectare Kurofuji Egg Farm he runs in Yamanashi with his two sons, Yohei and Ikki. At 1,100 meters elevation with natural spring water on-site and no development upstream, the location is ideal for free-range poultry farming.
At first Mukoyama had to travel abroad to research organic methods. Back in Japan, he shared the knowledge he had gained by hosting workshops, and eventually met enough like-minded growers to buy organic feed in bulk, mitigating the high costs. His rich topsoil is a blend of mulch and rock-based minerals. Its bacterial content boosts the birds’ natural immunity as it breaks down manure, returning it to the soil.
